Vanakkathukiriya Kathali(1977)

I've yet to watch this movie in its entirety. It's so slow and boring, I can't make it through the first disc without falling asleep. IIRC, it's about twin sisters separated at birth. One is a traditional village girl who has ESP, the other is more Westernized and dies near the end(I think). I will have to pop in the second disc and try to view it all the way through.

The seventies version of Sridevi is love. I had an LJ friend who felt the same way. I think we were the only ones who preferred Sri's pre-plastic surgery looks.

Thaiyillamal Naanillai(1979)

I used to have a couple of songs and a few scenes from this movie uploaded on YouTube, but I kept getting nabbed by the copyright police, so I had to take down all of my videos :(

Sivappu Rojakkal(1978)

This scene is one of the reasons why I like this movie so much. I'm not even gonna try to explain it, because it makes sense to only me :)

ETA 12/24/09: I LOVED the chemistry between Sri and Kamal. My only regret is that they didn't have sex--albeit the simulated kind--in this movie. Of course, if they had "done it", Sridevi's character would've "had" to die. But because there was coitus interruptus in the form of a phone call from Dileep's(Kamal) assistant, Saradha kept both her virginity and her life intact :)

I felt Kamal was pretty much playing himself: suave, arrogant, misogynistic, and a sex fiend, minus the "killing-women-while-taping-it" part. He was so perfect in the role, I don't even want to remember there was a Hindi remake, Red Rose, with Rajesh Khanna as the lead. I haven't watched it, and as long as I am of somewhat sound mind, I never will. (Yeah, it's that serious.)

To this day, hearing "Ninaivo Oru Paravai" makes me smile. An online acquaintance once remarked that one of the shots of Sri and Kamal lying on the bed made her think of me :) I capped the particular shot she was talking about, and I was going to link to it, but of course I can't find it. ETA 01/14/10: Here it is:

"Ninaivo Oru Paravai" was on a compliation CD I ordered a few years ago from India Plaza but naturally, it wasn't in stock. Incidentally, I got Sivappu Rojakkal from the same place; however, it was on back order for so long, I was afraid I'd never get it. But after about three months, it finally arrived in my mailbox.

While I'm on the subject of songs in the movie, I wish I could get my hands on a copy of the full 15 minute remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love". The edited versions just don't do it for me.

Ninaithale Inikkum(1979)

I remember Jayaprada's overplucked brows, drug smuggling, blood cancer, a low-key weddding ceremony, touring with the band, and death. Oh, and the beauty of both Singapore and Kamal Hassan. Plus, no littering(have to pay a huge fine), "I LOVE YOU!" in three languages, Nama Ooru Singaari, and Rajni's karate moves.

Kamal was so beautiful in his youth. His looks are half the reason I'm firmly on his team. The other half is because I think he's a good actor. (Although, he does have a tendency to overact and/or chew up all the available scenery.)

Aalwar(2007)

It's not as bad as I initially thought. I still think Ajith looks ridiculous in the Lord Rama getup, and his monotone kills whatever impact the "Kadavul. Naan Kadavul" line might have had, but overall, I think it's a decent timepass. And the sight of Ajith as a brooding, do-gooder type gets my motor running. I didn't think a mortician could be so appealing. **ahem**

Asin was cute, but she didn't have much to do. To amuse myself, I checked for her supposed "wide hip". (An individual on another site posted something along the lines of, "Her hip is wide enough to screen a movie.") I'm either blind or overly forgiving of her flaws because her hips, at least from what I could see, looked normal to me. **shrug** Besides, compared to some of the fleshier heroines, she's downright bony.

On the first listen, I thought the songs were forgettable. But now I realize that "Pallandu, Pallandu" is really beautiful, and "Pidikkum" and "Mayile Mayile" have grown on me, although I wish the DVD contained the uncensored version of the latter song.

Kireedam(2007)

I went ahead and bought the DVD in spite of being less-than-impressed with what little I watched online. Jumping ahead to the 44 minute mark helped, because I actually got into the story and liked it, in spite of the annoying Vivek and the modified ending. I think the Sruthilayam version has the original sad climax, which makes me kinda wish I had ordered that one instead.

Ajith looks absolutely bew-TEE-full this movie. A tad aged, but still very pleasing to my eyes. Acting-wise, he was not-bad, but to be honest, I was more moved by his appearance than by his performance. **sheepish grin**

Strangely, I found Trisha rather unremarkable. Normally, I think she's the cutest and/or the best thing in/about whatever movie she's in, but here, she didn't really do anything for me. She looked nice, but at the same time, she was just kinda there. Like, they could've replaced her with a cardboard cutout and I probably wouldn't have noticed. **shrug**

I should watch the original Malayalam version with Mohanlal and see how it compares.

ETA 01/22/10: Although I've watched only the first half, I can say with utmost certainty that the original is far better than the remake.

Thodarum(1999)

I want to watch this solely because of these songs: "Yamma" and "Shock Adikkum". Ajith looks hot with those spectacles in the former, and I find the latter to be both sexy and hilarious. The plot sounds interesting, too.

Anytamil has both the DVD and custom VCD listed, but I wish I knew for certain whether or not the DVD is available. The thing I hate about ordering from them is that I never know if something is in stock until the amount gets charged to my card, which can take up to three weeks. **pout** And I've tried emailing them beforehand, but I never get a response.

Prema Pustakam(1992)

Ajith Kumar's first and only Telugu movie. It doesn't appear to be commercially available--not in or to the U.S., anyway. It was supposedly a hit, so I figure it would be on VCD at least. I can't find anything on YouTube or Google, which only makes me more determined to hunt it down, because I really, really want to see how Ajith looked in his debut. He's one of my current obsessions, so I "have" to watch as many of his movies as I can ;)

ETA: Well, according to the not-always-reliable Wikipedia, "this flim was super hit telugu box office[sic]", but an old rediff.com article called it "eminently forgettable"; in an interview on the same site, Ajith said that the director died during the shooting of the film and it was shelved, and in this interview("The Star Next Door", scroll down a bit), he used the words "a disaster" to describe his debut.

Forgettable disaster or not, I still want to see it. I'm suprised none of his superfans have tracked it down and uploaded it somewhere. Then again, maybe one of them did and it got yanked. **shrug** Who knows?

ETA2: Here's a link to the songs, as well as a pic of Ajith as he appeared in the movie: I think he sorta looks like the young Kamalhassan. Thank you, Sree, for the link, as well as additional info about the film :)

Thirupathi(2006)

This movie is a hot mess. HOTTT MESSSSSS!!!!. I watched it three times last night and I'm still trying to make sense of it all. Let's see: Thirupathi's(Ajith Kumar) sister dies while giving birth in a government hospital because the doctor lied about the difficulty of the birth so that he could get more money from Thirupathi's family. (I think.) Thirupathi swears revenge on the doctor, who is also the half-brother of Thirupathi's wealthy best friend, who isn't really his friend, but is only using him. And then there's Thirupathi's younger(?) brother who's studying to be a doctor but he doesn't want to stay in India, he wants to go abroad where he'll make more money. Lots of fights and lofty speeches and song sequences ensue. In the end, a new law is passed where all hospitals are required to allow women to give birth for free. (I think.)

If it weren't for the songs, Sada wouldn't have had a reason to be in the film. Laila Mehdin makes an appearance in one of the songs. None of the songs made an impression on me as they all looked and sounded the same.

I found Ajith's character to be thoroughly unlikeable. Maybe it was his haggard, bug-eyed appearance. Maybe it was his better-suited-for-Vijay mannerisms and speeches. Maybe it was the raging allergy headache I had last night that was made worse by watching this hodgepodge mess of a movie(and THREE times at that, because I wasn't sure of what I saw the first time). Whatever it was, I vastly prefer the Ajith of Mugavari, Vaali, Poovellam Un Vasam, and Paramasivan(where he was just as thin, but not quite as crackhead-looking).

ETA: I'm watching it again(gotta get my money's worth!) and I've decided that maybe Ajith doesn't look that bad. I'm thinking that his Vijay-esque histrionics clouded my judgement about his appearance. Or maybe not. I don't know. Anyway, I DO like the song with him and Laila just because it's him and Laila. I like their (real or imagined) chemistry.

Ayan(2009)

Muy brief, random musings based on what I've seen so far:

In spite of the modern day setting, it feels like a throwback to the eighties.

The small screen(i.e. my television set) doesn't do Surya justice. He looks much better on the large screen. And his abs? A joy to behold. I could look at them all day. I wish six packs were more common in Tamil films.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw Tammana in Kedi was "DSL". She has a nice mouth. It's her best feature, I think. Facially, she looks like she could be a distant relative of the Kapoors--Karishma, in particular. She and Surya make a good onscreen pair.

From what I can tell, it's worth a DVD purchase. I would classify it as "a nice popcorn flick". Not great, but entertaining enough for me to rewatch a few times.

NFR: Mallika Sherawat.

I was randomly looking through my Photobucket album and came across these early modeling pics of Mallika Sherawat:

NFR: Lakshmi Rai

NFR = Non-film related

At the launch of Pink fitness studio on March 13, 2009.

Thoranai(2009)

According to chennai365.com: "Thoranai looks like some Hollywood movie...[it stars] beautiful and sexy Shriya Saran opposite Vishal..[it] has been shot in exotic locales and magnificent sets built in Chennai and Hyderabad. The film has spectacular stunts, hilarious comedy track, and heart melting romance."

Wow. Sounds like the description of just about every other movie that has been or is about to be released these days. That's okay, though, because I'll watch it purely for eye candy reasons. Vishal has only 1.5 facial expressions, but he's not bad looking, and he has a nice, toned body. And Shriya is one of the most gorgeous women on this planet. I wouldn't mind trading faces with her.

Current SLO: Sana Khan.

SLO = Short-Lived Obsession

She made her debut in the wonderfully hot mess that was Silambattam(speaking of which, should I get the 2-in-1 DVD or wait for the Ayngaran version?) and will be seen next in Thambikku Intha Ooru, opposite Bharath. She's an ad model who's best known for the "controversial" Amul Macho underwear ad. She recently filmed another version of that ad.

Tiny screencaps from first Macho Amul ad.

Facially, she reminds me of Simran, which is probably why I like her. I hope she does more Tamil films solely because I think she's pretty and sexy and a decent dancer.

Billa(2009)

I sorta want to watch this, even though I'm not a Prabhas fan, just to see how it compares to the 2007 Tamil version. The trailer looks pretty cool, and I like the picturisation of the "Bommali" song. I'm sure it will have a huge, or at least decent, opening, and it may even be a hit. **shrug** Who knows?

ETA 06/22/09: I feel a strong urge to pay full price for the DVD instead of waiting for it to land in the $5.99 pile. I blame my itchy fingers on the YouTube clips of Anushka. Not only did they ping my interest, they also made me seek out the whole movie. It's a near scene-by-scene rehash of the Tamil version, but with more stuff added. "Over-the-top" is the best description I can come up with right now, and I mean that in a good way.

Somebody hold me because I find Prabhas hot. I don't know if it's the shades or the gratuitous shots of his naked torso, but I actually feel something. Like, I sense myself wanting to become a fangirl and rewatch Munna and Yogi. It's downright scary.

Even Hansika Motwani appeals to me(although, I still think she looks about 23 instead of her actual age of 17). I like her item number better than Rose Dawn's.

Namitha looks prettier here than in the Tamil version. She could still stand to lose a few kilos, though. And her dancing is as cringe-worthy as ever. Anushka seems to have more oomph than Nayantara, especially in her bikini scenes. Or maybe it just seems that way because both she and Namitha were given more screen time to vamp it up.

Based on what I've viewed so far, I think I like the Telugu Billa a teensy bit more than the Tamil one, especially since Prabhas and Anushka have more interaction/flirtation than Ajith and Nayantara.

ETA 12/24/09: Having rewatched the Tamil version for the fifteen millionith time, I've now decided that I like Rose Dawn's weaving and jerking to "Sei Ethavathu Sei" better. For reasons unknown, I've suddenly developed a soft spot for her. She might become my latest "SLO", even though I have no idea what she's done since Billa.

And while I thought Prabhas looked hot, he just doesn't do it for me the way Ajith does. No matter how old, fat, bloated, and/or haggard-looking Ajith gets, I will always find him sexy on some level. He's just got it like that.

However, I still prefer Anushka's bikini scene to Nayantara's, especially now that I'm getting kind of sick of Nayan. Maybe I need to rewatch Ghajini, Vallavan, and/or Rappakal to feel the love again.

ETA 02/03/10: Anushka still looks better in a bikini but I've decided that I really don't like Hansika's item number. It's not bad, just not significantly better than Rose Dawn's. I've also decided that the Telugu Billa is an unncessarily drawn-out near-copy of the Tamil version. I do like the additional scenes with Prabhas and Anushka, but otherwise, it's like, "Why?"

I found Prabhas appealing enough to consider rewatching Munna, Yogi, and Chakram, but I'm still not totally sold on him. He looked nice, but the robotic voice and "Hasta la vista, baby!" killed it for me. Ajith doesn't have the most expressive of voices, either, but I felt his particular deadpan was a better fit for the character. Maybe I'm biased. Oh, well. **shrug**

I wonder if the 1980 Billa with Rajnikanth is available from Anytamil. It's listed, but that doesn't mean it's in stock. I liked what I saw online, and while I'm not a Rajini fan, I thought he did justice to the role. I should probably watch the original Don with Amitabh and Zeenat, just to see how it compares.

Kanthaswamy(2009), part deux.

I have no idea what this movie is about, but I want to see it. I've already expressed my fondness for the trailer in this post. I hope I don't wind up disappointed with the final product.

I love Shriya's shorter hair. Don't know if it's a wig or real, but I like it. I want my hair cut in a similar style.

Short takes, pt. 9.

Or, "What Should I Waste My Money On Next?"

Black & White - I have no idea what this is about, and I'm too lazy to Google, but Sindhu Tolani is in it, which is good. Jackie Shroff is also in it, which might be not-so-good because for some inexplicable reason I'm not jazzed about seeing him in a Tollywood flick. But, if I can deal with the "shock" of seeing Shakti Kapoor in a Kannada film(Makeup), I guess I can put up with Mr. Shroff.

Premikulu - The plot sounds interesting, but I dunno. It's only $3.99, so it wouldn't be too much of a waste if I wound up not really liking it.

Dhill - I'm not feeling Vikram's hairdo in this movie, but I kinda want to see it, mostly for Laila, my current SLO(Short Lived Obsession). Speaking of whom, she's also in the following flicks:

Akrosam - Dubbed Telugu version of Nandha.

Love Story 1999 - No clue, but Rambha's also in it.

Ullam Ketkume - Also has Asin. Could be a possibility.

Na Hrudayamlo Nidurinche Cheli - ??? I can't seem to find any info on this. Maybe it's a Telugu dub of a Tamil movie.

I have posts in the "draft" stage for Raasi, Mugavari, Andala Ramudu, and Paramasivan that I hope to have published soon(and by "soon" I mean, "Sometime by the end of this year."). I would also like to type something about Rojavanam and Unnidathil Ennai Kuduthen. I wish I could swallow a bottle of motivation pills because that's what I'm lacking these days WRT this blog. I started out great guns and then I lost interest. I have to find a reason to be interested again.

Back to movies: I've bitched about it elsewhere, but I'll bitch here, too: Kannadastore, why Paypal? I don't trust Paypal. If I did, I would get Meera Madhava Raghava, Masti, Satya in Love, and Rama Shama Bhama, and also Kokila and Maria My Darling, even though I have a feeling that the last two are in the "on backorder indefinitely"(i.e. not available) category.
