Pudhiya Geethai(2003)

***SPOILER ALERT***: I'm mad that Sarathy(Vijay) didn't die at age 27 as the astrologer predicted in the beginning of the film. Yeah, I should've known better, this being a Vijay movie and all but still, I sat through the entire thing just to see how he would meet his maker, only to have a "If we all clap our hands really hard, Tinkerbell will live!"**-type moment near the end. "Even death can change its plans for a good man"? Um, no. I can think of one particular example in which that definitely wasn't the case, but I'm digressing. Anyway...

I got this solely because of Amisha Patel. I'm not a fan, but for some reason, I really like her. I think it's her unconventional looks that attract me. She didn't have much of a role, though. Neither did Meera Jasmine. But they were both cute, as was Vijay. In fact, Vijay was so cute I wish I had enjoyed this flick more. Perhaps if his character hadn't been so upstanding and perfect, and successful at everything, I would've found his "live life to the fullest" message easier to swallow. I figure, it's not that much of a struggle to enjoy life when things are going well. It's when you can remain somewhat positive and upbeat in spite of facing adversity on a regular basis that--oh, never mind. I was never good at waxing philosophical.

Maybe this film will grow on me after repeat viewings. I would hate to have wasted my money, seeing how this was strictly an impulse buy due to Amisha's presence on the DVD cover.

**Or however it goes. I didn't watch either the movie or the stage version of Peter Pan, but I heard about that particular part. IIRC, Tinkerbell died, anyway.

Anjaneya(2003)

I have no idea what this movie is about. I've watched it at least thirty times, I've read this review and yet, I still draw a blank whenever I try to come up with something to type. After the first five minutes my brain shuts down and I spend the remaining 2 1/2 hours staring at the TV screen in a haze. It is my dream that one day, someone will sit me down and very carefully explain to me what the hell is going on. Until then...

Oh Ajit, how I love thee!

Rathri Mazha(2008)

I'm going to have to come back to this, because it was a little too heavy for me to try to watch in one sitting. But here are my thoughts so far:

Vineeth and Meera Jasmine looked like members of the Blue Man Group in the opening scenes. I kept thinking, "Blue blobs, blue blobs, their faces look like BLUE BLOBS!" I don't know if the picture quality of the DVD is THAT bad, or if they were lit that way on purpose.

Talking to the camera: DO NOT LIKE!

Was there a bit of meta(?) involved when Meera's character, whose name was also Meera, says that Mammootty is her favorite actor? I immediately thought of how they worked together in Ore Kadal and wondered if she was making a winking reference to that.

"Dowry is hidden in the term 'appropriate family background'"--haha I like that!

Vineeth looks better in stills than he does on film.

This might take a while to grow on me.

ETA: I had it on repeat the other night, and I think some of it may have sunk in while I was sleeping because when I re-watched it yesterday, I definitely appreciated it more than I did on my first viewing.

I still think Vineeth looks better in pics, but when he wore glasses, I found him quite handsome. I wish there had been more scenes of him dancing. From what was shown, he appears to be a very beautiful and sensual dancer.

Ore Kadal(2007)

This movie is responsible for my current Mammootty crush. I bought it on a whim from bhavanidvd. It was only $7.99, and after a quick skim of the plot summary I thought, "Why not?"

I'm glad I got it because otherwise, I never would've been introduced to the drunken, disheveled hotness that was Mammootty's character. **wry grin** But that's not the only reason I liked it. I thought it was well-acted, engrossing, and erotic. (That sentence sounds weird, but I'll leave it be.) I wish I could give a more detailed explanation of why I enjoyed this film so much, but my thoughts are scattered and it's hard for me to translate what I'm thinking to my computer screen. Maybe one day I'll take notes while I'm watching it for the umpteenth time and attempt to come up with something that sounds semi-intelligent.
